Talking audio books have been around since the early 1930’s. They were a caveman type format, very simple and the audio was not how it is today (so I am told). It has taken us about 75 years to really take notice and start listening to audiobooks (are you one?). Have you noticed that simple everyday enjoyments such as reading a book are gone due to not having enough time? Everyday you hear some one saying “there is not enough time in a day”…this does not mean the days are getting shorter. But why are we lacking free time where we use to read a good short story or novel?
Simple, with the adaptation of computers into our everyday lives, most of us use them at work and at home. Think about it, could you live without your computer for a month or more? Probably not, even though it might be nice to be separated from our computers. But it seems they have consumed our lives like nothing else. We have become very reliant on computers and other electronic gadgets for that matter.
Computers were suppose to make our lives simple and create a lot of spare time for us to enjoy with our families, friends and ourselves. Computers definitely made us more efficient, but we now are busier than we ever have been as a result. That extra free time has been consumed by heavier workloads as we are able to do more work in a day with the help of computers. We work and do more each and everyday, heck people are even now working six or seven days a week just to keep up. So as you can see, our lives have become the total opposite to what we thought they would when computers were just coming into existence.
As a result, we slowly have given up on our pleasures of life such as reading your favorite book or magazine. When we do have a little time to read a book (usually while on holidays), we have to rush through it to complete the book before we return to work. End all the madness and grab a hold of a great book! But how, when we have no free time (didn’t we just finish stating how there is not enough time in the day anymore)? Yes we did, but there is a solution and a simple one to boot!
Talking Audio Books are the answer to enjoying books once again. Audiobooks have been around for many years and they have advanced right along with computers. The quality of audio books is very high with digital technology, bringing very entertaining audiobooks to listeners all over the world. The best benefits to listening to audio books are:
1. You can literally listen to audio books anywhere, anytime while doing anything! (well ok, it is not recommended while swimming…but why would you)

Do outdoor tasks such as cutting the grass, weed the flower beds, water the grass or wash your automobile. Do indoor jobs such as vacuuming, washing dishes, cleaning the bathrooms, laundry or washing the floors. Commute to work, school or driving to the grocery store. Travelling on holidays either in planes, trains, or automobiles (there is a great book title right there). Also enjoy an audio book when you are relaxing by the pool or better yet on the beach of the tropical destination. Are on lunch break, spare or recess depending if you are working, attending grade school or secondary school. Work out at the gym, meditating at home or do yoga, these are all good times. Crawl into bed and get ready for a good nights sleep. Best of all your significant other can be lying beside you and will not hear a thing. That annoying night light will not keep them up ever again, you can now listen to a book in the dark. Just put in your ear plugs and listen away while relaxing. I end everyday and begin each nights sleep listening to meditation audiobooks, you will be amazed how well you sleep (ZZZZzzzzzzzzzz…).
2. Any title you want to find will be on an audiobook. Every year more and more book titles are being produced, giving you years of constant listening pleasure (and that is if not another title would be produced again). So a tremendous selection awaits your ears.
3. Save time listening to audio books while you are doing other tasks that are mentioned above in the first point. There are many times when it is impossible to physically read a book, however very possible to listen to an audiobook.

5. Stop the repetitive question of “are we there yet?” for the next long family haul down the highway. Select the appropriate number of audiobooks for your travelling time to keep the entire family entertained. The benefits of building an audio book library are very similar to those of building one for printed books. A library as defined by wikipedia is “a collection of information, sources, resources, and services: it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual.” For the most part we will be discussing the benefits of collecting audio books as a private individual. Books have been written and produced in spoken word for a variety of topics and therefore the mix of audio books will be different for everyone but why have one at all?
Simply answered the major benefit is having ready access to the information that you value the most. Whether this is your tribute to a specific author that you love or a business reference library to refresh yourself on what makes a great company. Your audio book library is the collection of books that you have enjoyed and treasure enough to know that you will either need them again or want the pleasure of hearing them again.
In many ways audio books have experienced the same trend toward affordability that movies have. I love movies but if you were to have asked me 8-10 years ago whether I would start collecting them I would have asked you whether you thought I was made of money. Nowadays my older nieces who are in their late teens and early twenties buy movies the way I used to buy music singles in my day. Since the prices are so low they collect movies in what I sometimes think is an indiscriminate manner. If you love having the physical product you can collect audio books in cd or cassette but that might be a little more expensive and will definitely take up more space in your house than a download. If you can not afford building your own audio book library you will be happy to know that public libraries are also seeing the benefits of providing audio books to their members. This may be an inexpensive way of “auditioning” books for your permanent collection.
Shopping for audio books is relatively easy nowadays due to the prevalence of stores on the internet. Creating your audio book library can also be made easier by browsing through audio book catalogs provided by some of the online bookstores like mine. An audio books catalog can provide you with an easy way to find books that you might be interested in without having to be online and without having to search for specific titles. Online Audio Books – The Advantages of Downloading Your Audio Book

Getting online audio books is so easy. Unfortunately, if you choose to get your audio books on tape or compact disc, you will have to pay more for them because of the product design, and you will have to wait for them to arrive in the mail. With the mail problems of today, it could get lost, stolen or even sent to the wrong person. Although this does not happen that often, it is something to be concerned about as you do not want to lose it, especially if you have already been waiting for days and weeks. In the world of today, you no longer have to wait for very long if you have internet access. You can pretty much get what you want when you want it.
With online audio books in digital format, you will get the audio books instantly. You do not have to wait for them to arrive in the mail, pay the higher cost, pay for shipping, or only have the ability to listen to them in certain places. You can hear downloaded audio books on computers, PDA, MP3 players, and so on. You have the convenience of listening when you want to and where you want to.
You can also get the latest audio books as soon as you go to your favorite online audio book store. If you were going to buy a cassette tape or compact disc, you would have to wait for the audio book to be produced in these particular formats. With downloadable audio books, you do not have to wait to listen to the audio book of your choice.
There are, of course, some disadvantages to downloading an audio book online. However, these problems can be easily fixed. Audio books are much larger than other things you would download, such as music. Because of their size, they will take longer to download. The time it will take will depend on the website you are downloading from, and the speed of your internet connection. These might seem like some huge disadvantages, but they can be easily remedied.
1. Download in your spare time. Wait until you know you will not need to use the Internet. Set aside some time to download your audio book so you can step away from the computer and complete other tasks that need to be done, watch your favorite television show or movie, or just relax while you wait for your audio book to download.
2. Search for another downloading place. If you have a high-speed connection at work, you can download your audio book there instead of at home. First, make sure it is all right with your boss. Just tell them that you will be performing other work tasks while you are downloading your audio book and then do just that. If your local library has a higher speed internet connection than you do, you might also be able to download it there. Just call your local library and ask them. You could also ask a friend or family member that has a high-speed internet connection to download your downloadable audio books for you.
3. One more thing you can do to shorten the download time is to search and find audio book formats that are specifically created just for you and others who have a slower internet connection. These particular formats will download online audio books faster and easier for you.
Having said that, good downloadable audio book sites allow you to choose three qualities of download: high, medium and low, the latter taking the least amount of time to download because it has less megabytes, which reduces the quality a little, but this is generally fine with spoken word audio books.
